Crazy horse leather is oil-tanned full grain. Every shower and every year on your back darkens and softens it a little more. Small marks rub out with your thumb, and the rest becomes the character of your rucksack.
The waxed canvas does the same: it softens to the shape of your back, and a little canvas wax every few years keeps it shrugging off the rain.
